I can't believe it is almost time for the madness to begin! Every year I give myself a pep talk and start out with overly ambitious holiday ideas. From decorating the house to what kind of fun treats I want to gift to my children and husband. At least this is what plays out in my head. But then there is the plain reality of what I really have the energy for and how much I feel like spending.

As I get older, I realize that my kids, as do many kids, really get too many gifts during the holidays. And, in this culture of more is better, many of us as consumers get sucked into things we might not have bought just because it was such an unbelievable deal. And, in all the hustle and bustle, the "homemade with love" gets lost and even "shopping locally" gets pushed aside.

So my personal challenge this year? To "shop local" AND pull back on the quantity of gifts I give. This year I am looking to give that ONE gift that will delight, or that ONE gift that means something to the receiver...however big or small.

And, for the parents just embarking on their very FIRST Christmas or Hanukkah with children, let me give words of wisdom I wish I knew back then: which is that there will be many more holidays after this one. Pace yourself! I know it is hard to hold back on the first Christmas.

I'm pretty sure all I have left are some great photos and a "Baby's First Christmas" ornament. Isn't that all that really matters in the end?

Kids bored? Tired of the whinning?

It's summer and kids are free! To play, swim, imagine, squabble, be dirty, stay in their jammies all day, stay up late, and of course...finally get BORED.

We think there are a few tricks to shake up their "boredom barometer." Every couple of weeks introduce a new activity or craft. One at a time...so it is the FOCUS of the day.

At Hooray! we have activity kits and fun activity books geared for summer fun. Our kids loved the BUILD AND PAINT BIRDHOUSE KIT. Kids love to build things. And, given the opportunity to do a project themselves really boosts their sense of pride and accomplishment. A bit of parental guidance is needed to construct the house. But once the house is together...you can step back and leave the kids to paint and dream-up their PERFECT birdhouse decorations.

I was especially amused at my daughter's need to mark her birdhouse clearly for: Mrs. Bird and Mr. Bird. This must be their LOVE shack. Priceless!

So don't let them whine or get bored.

The Age Old Technique: Swaddling

When I had my first baby almost ten years ago, swaddling hadn't come back into fashion. In fact my "mommy" friends and myself didn't know what it was exactly nor the value of swaddling a newborn. Perhaps because the so-called "baby blankets" on the market ten years ago were typically knit jersey fabric and not generous enough in size to swaddle. And even if you could have swaddled the baby with these knit blankets, the baby most likely would have seriously overheated with the bulkiness of the fabric.

So much has changed (for the better) in the last ten years with regards to baby gear and baby care techniques. And now the AGE OLD technique of swaddling has really come back as a popular way to soothe and calm a newborn. It helps transition a newborn baby from the womb to the world. And studies suggest that a baby sleeps better and longer. An added plus is having a newborn's little arms tucked in to keep away the face scratches and the sudden arm movements which can startle them.

Today new mothers-to-be can easily find the appropriate size blankets and weights to successfully swaddle. There are summer weight swaddle blankets and winter weight swaddle blankets available on the market now with so many print styles to choose from.

One of our favorite brands we offer is Lemon Loves Lime. We love the ruffles, the comfort and ease of knit dressing, and we especially love the outrageous applique tees.

This season we have hunted "high & low" for new items you will not see anywhere else. We have headbands coming in from Brazil, swimmwear from Australia, and several new small USA companies putting a new vintage spin on children's clothes.

Hooray! Holiday Open House!

Not only are we excited to be in our new location, but now we have the space to decorate and stock fun and exciting items for the holidays!

This coming week-end, November 5, 6, & 7th, is our Holiday Open House. And to kick the season off to a festive start, we have invited artist, Dakri Sinclair, to set up "shop" for a day of fun with her hand painted Christmas ornaments.

Come in with your gift-giving list and she will hand paint and personalize each ornament that will become a keep-sake. From baby's first Christmas to monogrammed ornaments. Each one is a treat to receive! We are excited that she can join our open house this year.

We are also fully stocked with wooden & educational toys! Not to mention the selection of great holiday dresses and outfits. So many treasures to choose from! One for you...and two for me.

What a spring & summer this has been!

With fast pace as our "norm"...this spring and summer was jammed into high-gear not only with kids, school stuff, running a business...but, oh yeah... the additional task of renovating a historic building to expand our store. Are we crazy!? (positively.)

OOOoooh, but the possibilities are endless. As any designer might admit, this is what we love! The planning and daydreaming. And, if you make a mistake...well then...let's just rewind and start all over. And, that is the best part of daydreaming. No demolition involved...just yet.

Enjoy the pictures! Everything was gutted. Even the front was torn off and completely rebuilt. We thank DeWeese construction for their amazing wood-working talent. Bravo!

Zutano baby!

We have carried Zutano since opening our store four years ago. And, this brand is a mom favorite because of the cute prints and great price point.

Our goal is to offer our internet shoppers a similar experience to shopping our brick & mortar store. As we all know, time can get away...with work...kids...work...juggling act. You know the drill. So not all products make it onto our website.

However, this month we will be adding Zutano as one of our featured brands! We think you will be delighted with any Zutano purchase. Breakfast with the Sugarplum Fairy!

On November 7th we were invited to showcase some of our Fall & Winter fashions in the 3rd annual cMoe "Breakfast with the Sugarplum Fairy" style show. This event took place at The Centre in downtown Evansville on Locust Street.

Our sister store, The Secret Garden, donated a decorated Christmas tree to be auctioned, and Hooray! Children's Boutique had stylin' models zooming up and down the runway. In the photos, sweet Lily Koch wore French brand Catimini's Spirit City tunic sweater with Primigi's tall black suede Vivenne boots. Wearing boy Catimini was our handsome Blair, also with Catimini's matching red cap & scarf. Our other models included the adorable Sarah, Xavier, and Christian. Thanks to all our wonderful models!!

It was the perfect pre-holiday event to get everyone in the spirit! Hosted by cMoe (The Children's Museum of Evansville) to raise funds for their new exhibits and summer scholarship programs.

They do make them like they used to!

Hooray! Fall weather is just around the corner...and it seems like just yesterday we were floating and jumping in the pool with many snack breaks in-between. Ask yourself, how many popsicles did you consume in ONE afternoon?

One of our favorite toys at Hooray! is the push toy. Toddlers just mastering walking LOVE push toys. And, if the toy can make noise or do something...even better. Something else to consider with a push-toy is the fact that they can see it as they push the toy...versus pulling and constantly looking behind them to see the toy. A push toy (vs. pull toy) can help avoid some unnecessary boo-boos for toddlers of this age.
Try our penguin push toy under your Christmas tree this year. Made of solid wood with a large orange ball at the end for easy grasping. Push this little bird around and the wings flap-flap! Mom & Dad...no loud banging or clanking...just a clickety-clack.

Need a great gift for a 4 to 6 year old? At this age, they are interested in doing things with their hands. And they want to be able to accomplish something by themselves.

This FELT FRIENDS craft kit is the perfect solution! The kit comes with precut figures...in this case a dog & kitty. Perforations are already there so your child can easily start their sewing with a child safe plastic needle. (Great hand and eye coordination practice!) As a busy mom myself, trying to fit just one more thing into an already crammed schedule is even more impossible during the holidays! So this year I am trying to cut back the running around town syndrome, and spend more quality time at home with the kids.

And, I am looking for quality time. Minimal mom distractions...no cleaning, no phone, & no computer. Only pure silly and giggly pajama time! Pancakes for dinner and cupcake baking afterwards. Maybe a Christmas movie to get into the spirit of things... We hope your family can slow down, too!
